How it sounds

The ice shifts inside the heavy crystal tumbler with a dull, thick sound barely heard over the upright bass. The mahogany bar has been polished so many times that the amber overhead spotlight reflects like a gold coin sinking in dark water. It is a quarter to three on a Tuesday that leads nowhere. At the back, leaning against the upright piano with ivory keys yellowed by decades of tobacco, a man tilts his head toward the condenser microphone without touching it, letting distance do the work of sharpening the tone.

The trio moves slowly, pacing every measure as if afraid of cracking the air. The wire brush on the snare skims the drumhead with a dry, steady rasp that mimics cloth sliding against cloth in an empty hallway. There is no rush because nobody is waiting for anyone outside these four walls. The worn burgundy upholstery absorbs whatever heat is left. Someone left a coat draped over a booth back, and the sleeve hangs limp, pointing at the floor, empty in the exact shape of an absence.

The voice arrives half a beat behind the time, brushing against the melody with the grace of someone who has lost enough to stop arguing. The vowels stretch out like warm oil across the grain, and the piano answers with a minor chord that dies before reaching the final key, leaving silence to fill the space where a name used to be.
