How it sounds

It is four in the morning inside an empty conservatory hall where the acoustic treatment feels like heavy wool against the skin. There is no audience, only three music stands lit by harsh, cold lamps that barely illuminate the grid paper spread across them. On the floor, contact microphone cables snake toward an open-reel tape deck spinning with a low, steady hum most people would mistake for silence.

The cellist is not playing a tune; he presses the horsehair of the bow against the bridge with calculated exactness, hunting for that friction point where pitch surrenders to sheer air pressure, turning into a rasp that hangs in the room like cold mist. On the mixing console screen, the frequency spectrum blooms in shades of violet and blinding white, climbing from deep sub-bass to the edge of the audible. A natural harmonic slides a microtone upward, floating like an invisible needle piercing the skin beneath your collarbone.

Time does not march here; it widens, stretching until every second has thickness and weight. Overtones bleed into one another, vibrating with the blinding glare of sunlight cutting through dust. Across the room, someone runs a wet finger along the rim of a crystal glass, and that high frequency marries the sustained brass pedal, forging a new color that belongs to no single instrument, only to the space between them.

The sound does not strike you: it dissolves your edges, rendering you translucent from the inside out until you can no longer tell where your body ends and the vibrating air begins.
