How it sounds

It is 3:15 AM in an unvented basement along Alphabet City. The exposed brick walls trap an oily, humid heat. You are standing five feet from a tenor saxophone that has ceased sounding like brass; it sounds like an industrial steam pipe splitting under pressure. The player bites down hard on the reed, forcing the air column backward to squeeze out a multiphonic screech that raises the hair on your forearms.

To his left, the upright bassist refuses to walk any recognizable line; he drags a horsehair bow across gut strings with the screech of fracturing timber, then drops the bow and slaps the hollow wooden body with his bare palm, loud and abrupt, like someone battering a locked door at midnight. The drum kit keeps no meter. The drummer clutches two sticks in his right fist, churning the unlathed ride cymbal into a boiling mist of brass that blankets the room. There is no groove to nod to. There is no hook to catch you when the room spins.

The trio never trades glances to stay together; they listen only to collide head-on, stampeding through sweat, valve oil, and scorched spit. Next to you, someone stands stiff with fists jammed deep into coat pockets, staring open-mouthed at the horn dripping condensation onto frayed cables. The vibration does not enter through your ears; it climbs your shins and locks your jaw, leaving a metallic taste of copper under your tongue.
