How it sounds

It is three-thirty in the morning in a jazz cellar where the floorboards groan like an old knee. The counter is sticky with cheap liquor and the glasses hold melted ice that stopped chilling hours ago. The stage light is a crooked fifty-watt amber bulb, illuminating only the dust motes hanging in the air and the rim of a whisky glass left forgotten on the piano. There is no audience, just a couple of heavy coats draped over empty chairs and a woman staring at the bottom of her coffee mug with a fixation that unnerves you.

The double bass enters before the beat even starts: four low, gut-string notes that chase not a rhythm, but the exact hollow space between one breath and the next. The wood vibrates right through the soles of your shoes. There is no full drum kit, only the dry sweep of wire brushes across a snare rim, mimicking the sound of fine rain against window glass. Then the saxophone releases a long note, an unhurried lament that drifts through the thick air of stale tobacco smoke before dissolving against the brick wall.

And right there, when the silence begins to weigh too much, the voice starts to speak. It does not sing. There is no comforting melody to hold your hand, no easy rhyme to save you from what comes next. It is a confidence delivered two inches from your ear, raspy with the fatigue of someone who has spent hours chewing on a truth that no longer fits in the mouth. Every syllable drops like a lit match into a puddle of oil: dry, precise, inevitable. You stay completely still because you know moving an inch would snap the thread.
