How it sounds

The corrugated iron roof of the warehouse hums with a sub-bass that doesn't just play, it rattles the fillings in your back molars. It is four in the morning beneath the overpass, and the air smells of fresh rust and scorched rubber. A bare fluorescent tube hangs from a frayed cord, humming at a high frequency, slicing through the dimness every two seconds with a sickly white strobe. Someone beside you stomps on a distortion pedal, and the guitar stops being music and becomes a circular saw blade drilling straight into your temples.

The 808 hits from underneath, but it is not a clean note: it is a thick, overdriven mass that shoves the air against your lungs until you are gasping. The voice cuts straight through, spitting a verse in Spanish that bleeds mid-sentence into a screaming line of English, fast and relentless, as if the ribcage were too small for the pressure building inside. There is no empty space between the snare hits and the metallic clatter of chains dangling from a girder.

Cold sweat trickles down your neck as strobe lights rip jagged cyan and red flashes off the crumbling concrete walls. Your body can no longer tell if the ache comes from the sub-bass slamming against your sternum or from the dry, white-hot fury locked in your veins.
