How it sounds

The cold stone floor drinks the heat from your bare soles while the amber glow of a single candle carves through the room's deep dusk. There are no chairs, only thick adobe walls holding in the street's dead silence and the heavy, resinous smell of burning oud hanging beneath the vaulted ceiling. Three paces away, a figure begins to turn with open arms: the right palm tilted upward to catch an unseen fire from above, the left turned toward the dirt to give it back.

A heavy wool skirt fans out into a clean circle, floating on momentum, cutting through the stagnant air. Then the ney enters. It is a reed flute blown with held breath, carrying a dry, raspy sob that sounds less like an instrument and more like a human throat exhausted from years of asking. Behind it, the daf frame drum finds its pulse. It is not a beat meant for moving feet; it is a steady thud against goat skin, marking the clock of the outer world just long enough for you to drop it.

Someone starts murmuring the name, a single syllable spoken low, over and over, until the repetition stops sounding like words and starts sounding like weather. The tempo doesn't climb out of panic, but out of gravity, like water finding the center of a drain. The air grows dense, almost solid. The chill leaves your feet. The flute's long, reedy moan merges with the thrum of blood behind your own temples.

The turning goes on without friction, a loop within a loop, until the corners of the room dissolve and nothing remains except the clean, ringing frequency of the name anchored right behind your ribs.
