How it sounds

It is a quarter past three in the morning inside a suburban shopping arcade that went dark back in ninety-four. The ceiling is a dome of yellowed acrylic that lets no light through, only the steady, low drone of ventilation motors that have run unattended for three decades. You are sitting on the edge of a dry indoor fountain lined with cracked tiles. There is no water, just accumulated dust and a couple of plastic palm fronds sagging at the base.

The polished terrazzo floor stretches out, mirroring a row of fluorescent tube lights that flicker with an electrical hum, keeping time to nothing at all. Far down the concourse, a vintage ceiling speaker system plays a mid-century ballad, but it has been pitched down by thirty percent and buried under layers of heavy reverb so thick the brass and strings no longer strike: they drag, they blur, melting into a warm, viscous paste hanging in the chilled air.

You hear the distinct scrape of magnetic tape stretching over a playback head, that constant hiss like static rain falling onto blue synthetic carpet. Footsteps echo two levels above, or perhaps it is just sound bouncing off the empty glass fronts of defunct storefronts that once sold appliances no one remembers. The air smells of old ozone, hot plastic, and the floor wax used when people still spent their Saturdays wandering these corridors.

Everything is deserted, yet the music keeps playing to an empty room, looping the exact same two-second fragment over and over, trapped in a cycle that refuses to move forward or end.
