Synthwave is a style from the Machines That Dream family. 110 BPM, Experimentation 28, Style strength 93.

What is Synthwave?

Retro analog synths and arpeggios racing beneath a neon sky. Synthwave: nostalgia for an 80s future that never came, cinematic and endlessly dreamy.

How it sounds

You're doing a hundred and twenty on a motorway that doesn't end. The horizon bleeds magenta behind palm trees that are no longer palm trees but silhouettes cut out of another planet, and the sun is a circle split into horizontal lines, as though someone drew it with a ruler.

The arpeggio starts and it isn't going to stop. It's an analogue synth running in circles, cyan over violet, and instead of accompanying anything it builds the whole set brick by brick, until you stop hearing music and start living inside a film that was never shot.

The dashboard is lit. There's a cassette in the slot. The speedometer reads something not entirely possible.

And here's the strange thing about synthwave: it wasn't born from pain, it was born from speed. It's nostalgia for a future the year 2000 cancelled without notice, the feeling that we were once going to live like this and it was taken away before we arrived. That's why it aches a little even when nothing in the lyric is sad.

In the build everything compresses. In section B everything opens and the road becomes a grid vanishing toward infinity, and for a moment it doesn't matter where you're going because the going is the place.

The asphalt is wet and throws the lights back. It hasn't rained. It never rains here. It's wet because it looks better that way.

Typical structure

[Intro] arpeggio → [Section A] → [Build] → [Section B] → [Outro]

The figures above are enough to produce the sound. They aren't enough to write the lyric. Synthwave carries a trap: nearly everything sayable about roads and lights has been said, and the engine has to know how close to cliché it can go before falling in. How to write nostalgia for something that didn't happen, how concrete an image can be before it breaks the film, where the single first-person line that holds everything goes. That lives in this card's internal distillation, eight parameters that aren't published, and the engine crosses it with your story. Afterwards, an internal judge measures the lyric against the canon and repairs. The arpeggio can be downloaded. The right distance can't.

Sample excerpt

Digital rain on the glass of the sedan, Sixty miles per hour past the terminal gate. My shadow stretches long in the violet hum, Tracing the lines where the grid starts to fray. The map on the dash glows amber and cold, Tracking a ghost through the static of night.

Lost in the circuit of an endless drive, Chasing the pulse where the horizon turns cyan. We are just echoes in a chrome-plated dream.

Workshop note — Synthwave lyrics thrive on spatial distance and technical imagery, keeping the lines clipped to mimic the steady, mechanical pulse of an arpeggiator. By focusing on the car as a boundary between the subject and the world, you achieve the signature cinematic detachment. Avoid emotional confessionals; instead, anchor the feeling in cold light, glowing dashboards, and the melancholy of vast, unpopulated distances.

When to choose this style

Choose this card when the story looks forward with some melancholy. It works for a car journey that meant something, for a move to another city, for the person who left to find a life and found half of one. For nostalgia for a decade — the eighties, the nineties, someone's adolescence — without it being sad. For long-distance love, the kind that lives in late-night calls. For the friend who's into games, science fiction films, or old cars.

It's one of the most versatile cards for a man between thirty and fifty, because nearly all of them grew up inside this aesthetic whether or not they can name it.

Don't choose it for anything intimate and close: synthwave always looks from a distance, from the car, and a kitchen or bedroom scene is too small for it. Nor for open pain or pure party. If what you want is this same aesthetic but more broken and more joyful, the card is Hyperpop.
