How it sounds

It is a quarter past three in the morning and the street looks washed out through the glass because the storm refuses to break, shifting only in tempo against the pane. The single active lamp holds an amber filament bulb that leaves the corners of the room in violet shadow, broken only by the cold, pale glow of a phone screen left face-down on the rug. The air feels heavy, holding the scent of clean cotton and the cold coffee left in a mug since last night.

There are no raised voices or slammed doors; the world has shrunk until it contains only these four walls and the low end of the Roland TR-808, a sub-bass note that rolls through the chest like warm water, heavy and unhurried. Above it, the Rhodes chords drift in slow, sustained layers, carrying the dusty texture of worn magnetic tape. You drop your jacket to the floor with a quiet thud. She sits at the edge of the mattress, knees pulled to her chest beneath an oversized shirt, her back turned to the light.

When you move closer, the floorboards give a faint groan, marking time in the quiet. You kneel before her without speaking. The vocal enters close to the mic, stripped of armor, carrying the precise weight of someone who has run out of places to hide. It cracks slightly on the second syllable of the phrase—a brief tremor born not of weakness, but of pride finally stepping aside. You rest your forehead against her knee while the bass keeps pulsing beneath you, steady and low, measuring out the only time that matters.
